Smartbone™ Intensive

The Smartbone™ Intensive, brought to you only by The Smart of Living is a 6-Month minimum, high-touch, individualized program, which is hyper-focused on improving bone-health and rooted primarily in the principles of lifestyle science and functional medicine. It is designed to complement your existing medical care, whether or not you are currently taking medication for bone health. We are currently taking a limited number of clients in person at our Westlake Village, CA location, and also accept clients on a hybrid or remote basis.

As the program name states, this is an intensive program which requires commitment and dedication from all participants. Improving bone health involves a variety of factors and does not happen overnight, so this program was purposely designed to dive deeply into appropriate support across areas like nutrition, safe movement, posture and more, ideally to jumpstart each client’s journey towards stronger bones and create measurable improvements.

If needed or desired, the 6-Month Smartbone™ Intensive program may be repeated, or if at the end of 6 months a less intensive program is needed, we do offer other options for continued support, both 1:1 and as part of our alumni community.

One of the most important facts to remember as you consider any program is that people CAN improve their bone health at almost any age or stage of life. The more you learn about root causes and daily behaviors which impact your bones, the more control you gain over this area of your health.

The Smart of Living’s Smartbone™ Intensive 6-Month Program accepts a limited number of clients who are committed to learning about and working on their bone health together. We look for motivated clients who will benefit from support in between doctor visits, who often have multiple diagnoses and want to not only strengthen their bones but also FEEL BETTER day to day. It is committed work on both sides, and a privilege for our team to have the time to work deeply to help jump-start positive outcomes in bone health and, almost always other areas as well.

We provide structured, individualized coaching-based support in between doctor visits with a clear, personalized plan designed to promote results by minimizing risk factors, and implementing nutrition, movement and other lifestyle strategies. If you are taking medication for bone health, we will also discuss strategies to manage side effects, and prepare you with educated questions for any upcoming doctor visits. Some clients like us to collaborate directly with their primary doctors and we are happy to do that as well.

Some common asks from our clients, that we help with:

  • Clarity around recent feedback from a doctor’s visit (frequently a new diagnosis of Osteoporosis or signs of bone loss (Osteopenia)

  • Actionable support between doctor visits, to help understand their condition, strengthen bones, improve balance and more

  • Support related to doctor visits, which may include preparing for an upcoming appointment with a list of questions or suggestions, understanding feedback from a doctor after a recent visit, or even directly collaborating with your primary care as part of the team. We are happy to be as involved as you like in that area, and are here for support where you feel it will help.

  • Measurable indicators of progress in between Dexa Scans (for example, you don’t have to wait 2 years to see indications of change in bone health or know if something is working). More frequent testing is available depending on your course of treatment, and we can guide you through that process.

  • Emotional support between doctor visits. We hear from so many clients that after a diagnosis they are scared to move because they are fearful of fracturing. We guide you through safe movements that improve your strength, balance and confidence, and avoid unsafe postures, positions of movements which are often included in mainstream gym or yoga classes for example.

  • Separating Fact from Fiction! There has been a lot of scientific progress related to bone health in recent years, and something you may have “heard” 10 years ago may not be true today. We help to clear up any confusion, and also have a network of some of the best experts in the country on bone health to reach out to if for some reason we don’t have the answer. As we move through the program, we share our knowledge of the latest scientific findings on a range of subjects including:

    • Exercises that “seem” good but may be harmful to those with low bone density.

    • The correct amount of resistance or weights for you specifically, to build bone and avoid injury.

    • Foods that seem “healthy” but may be damaging to bones such as avoiding high oxalate foods (which include a number of vegatables!)

    • Is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Safe? Is this an option for me to consider based on my situation? We will always share the latest scientific data and provide pros and cons to discuss with your doctor.

Finally, while we absolutely strive to help each and every person we speak with, it is important to note that this program is not a fit for everyone, depending on circumstances. Generally, this program may not be a fit for:

  • Acute Injury Care or Emergency Medical Concerns (always call 911 for any emergency) - we may be part of a longer term recovery from a fracture or injury, once any acute or emergency issues are addressed.

  • Anyone seeking “guarantees” or “quick fixes” … this program is designed as a minimum 6 month commitment for medical reasons, as we strive to provide real changes and the best outcomes.  Building bone takes time. This isn’t an overnight process, and it is a multi-faceted approach.  At the end of 6 months, there will be options for continued support. We are here to support you while actively working together, and for the many years to come after that.

  • Insurance-based services. At this time, coaching-based programs are not easily covered by insurance plans. There are a few insurance codes that do exist, but it is still early in the “health coaching” field and this is something we hope to see change in the future. When working together, we will provide you with receipts that have tax information and insurance codes, and you are welcome to submit those directly to your insurance provider, but many plans are not covering this yet so we want to set expectations that many clients do not get reimbursed. If you’d like to speak with your insurance company directly before committing to a program, we are happy to provide you with the appropriate information to have that conversation, but we do not bill insurance directly today for these reasons.
